I sent a postcard to Jeopardy! Last year
It’d be a good excuse to get down to L.A.
I won a freezerful of beef on a phone-in show
My freezer’s full but give it time, y’know
When I’m on, my luck is out of sight
But I work hard and I do alright
So let’s have a barbeque tonight at my house!
If I sat down and counted my blessings
I’d be cheating if I got past two or three
So If I seem a bit wierded out sometimes
Just smile and nod and humour me And this is Louie the Mute, say hello to him
And Maxie makes shoes out of soda straws
And that in the corner is Carlos;
He’s got the biggest collection of bullwhips I bet you’ve ever seen!
And who cares if our friendship is discreet
Or if it’s mainly because of the meat
Cos I’m completely happy tonight
Well, pretty close.

Songtekstvertaling
Er woont een oude vrouw op mijn vloer.
Ze brak haar heup afgelopen lente, ze komt niet veel meer buiten
Ze is boven met alle telefoon in gastheren.
Al kan het haar niet schelen of ze ze kent.
En het was voor haar dat ik dit gedicht schreef.
Ik ben niet zo oud als Ik wil dat ik denk dat ik ben soms krijg ik nog steeds dat levendige gevoel
Ik wil het huis schoonmaken of een mijl rennen.
Of probeer op te springen en het plafond te slaan.
Gooi de meubels door de kamer.
Zing voor mezelf een beetje vals
Doe de lichten uit en hang een maan uit het raam in de buurt beneden.
Ik stuurde een kaartje naar Jeopardy! Vorig jaar
Het zou een goed excuus zijn om naar LA te gaan.
Ik won een gratis biefstuk op een telefoon show.
Mijn vriezer is vol, maar geef het wat tijd.
Als ik aan het werk ben, is mijn geluk uit het zicht.
Maar ik werk hard en ik doe het goed
Dus laten we vanavond een barbecue houden bij mij thuis!
Als ik ging zitten en mijn zegeningen telde
Ik zou vals spelen als ik langs twee of drie kwam.
Dus als ik soms een beetje moe lijk
Lach en knik en doe me een plezier en dit is Louie de doofstomme, zeg hem gedag
En Maxie maakt schoenen van sodastrietjes
En dat in de hoek is Carlos;
Hij heeft de grootste verzameling bullwhips die je ooit hebt gezien.
En wat maakt het uit dat onze vriendschap discreet is?
Of als het voornamelijk door het vlees komt
Want ik ben helemaal gelukkig vanavond
Nou, bijna.
