I was convinced they would get me in the dark if I slept at all
I knew she was there in her bedroom, so I’d tiptoe down the hall
Lay my head on the floor and try to see under her door

and I’d look up and see that smile

At 19 I had all the answers, thought I could make it on my own
As we were packing she said,

Soon I found a one room apartment
Has monsters of it’s own
So sometimes late at night I’d drive by that old house
I stood there filled with fear, as she was passing away
They said, «She can’t hear you now, all we can do is pray.»
As I squeezed her hand, she opened her eyes
Smiled for me one last time

Toen ik jong was, was ik bang voor schaduwmonsters op mijn muren.
Ik was ervan overtuigd dat ze me in het donker zouden krijgen als ik zou slapen.
Ik wist dat ze in haar slaapkamer was, dus ik zou op mijn tenen lopen.
Leg mijn hoofd op de grond en probeer onder haar deur te kijken.
Ik was op zoek naar het licht.
Toen het aan stond, wist ik dat alles in orde was.
Voor ik kon kloppen, deed ze de deur open.,
en ik keek op en zag die glimlach
Ze wist het altijd als ik op zoek was naar het licht.
Op m ' n 19e had ik alle antwoorden.
Toen we aan het inpakken waren zei ze:,
"Vergeet nooit, dit is altijd je thuis»
Al snel vond ik een appartement in één kamer.
Heeft monsters van zichzelf.
Soms reed ik ' s avonds laat langs dat oude huis.
Ik stond daar vol angst, terwijl ze stierf.
Ze zeiden: "ze kan je nu niet horen, het enige wat we kunnen doen is bidden.»
Toen ik in haar hand kneep, opende ze haar ogen.
Glimlachte nog een laatste keer voor me
Ze wist het altijd al.
