Ze sloten de weg af door het bos.
Zeventig jaar geleden.
Weer en regen hebben het weer ongedaan gemaakt.,
En nu zou je het nooit weten
Er was eens een weg door het bos.
Voordat ze de bomen plantten.
Het is onder de coppice en heath,
En de dunne anemonen.
Alleen de wachter ziet
Dat, waar de ringduif broedt,
En de dassen rollen op de plaats rust.,
Er was eens een weg door het bos.
Maar als je het bos in gaat
Van een zomeravond laat,
Wanneer de nachtlucht afkoelt op de forelringende poelen
Waar de otter zijn maat fluit.
(Ze vrezen geen mannen in het bos,
Omdat ze zo weinig zien.)
Je zult de beat van de voeten van een paard horen.,
En de swish van een rok in de dauw,
Steeds verder
De mistige oplossingen,
Alsof zij het wisten.
De oude verloren weg door het bos.. ..
Maar er is geen weg door het bos.
